Sacramental Records

The sacramental records for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles are not centralized, but held in
the parish of origin. The following sacramental records from the Mission Period are on file
at the Archival Center, and are available for study to qualified researchers by appointment.

One should note that these materials exist in the collection as “Copy Flow Prints” taken from Micro-film images captured in the early 1960’s. Many images have deteriorated in quality
due to age and are illegible.

Information for sacramental records from the early Mission Period, occurring prior to 1851, is available on-line at the Huntington Library under the Early California Population Project link. (www.huntington.org)

The Plaza Church in the City of Los Angeles, located on Olivares Street, is also known as Our Lady Queen of the Angels Church. This church began as an outpost of San Gabriel Mission in 1784. Sacraments celebrated there were recorded in the sacramental record books of San Gabriel until 1826. We have found however that some sacraments celebrated at the Plaza continued to be recorded in the San Gabriel record books as late as 1840.

The Sacramental Register books from the Plaza Church on file at the Archival Center are listed below. One should note that these materials exist in the collection as “Copy Flow Prints” taken from Micro-film images captured in the early 1960’s. Many images have deteriorated in quality due to age and are illegible.
